Vaginal discharge is an intimate matter. Some vaginal discharge is normal. It is secreted by glands in the vagina and cervix to flush out bacteria and dead cells. This process helps lubricate and clean the vagina and prevent infection. Normal discharge should be white, thin or thick, and odorless and in a daily amount of about a teaspoon. The exact amount varies due to ovulation, menstrual flow, and sexual activity etc.
From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), any vaginal discharge is a result of balance with dampness and heat below the "belt channel" or Dai Mai (带脉) which circles the waist of the body. The discharge is itself a form of dampness, and the yellow or green color and fishy smell are signs of heat. The Kidneys source the production of vaginal discharge, the Spleen controls its transformation, and the belt channel restricts its discharge.
A main TCM approach to maintain vaginal health is therefore to drain the dampness and clear the heat. Feminclean™ (Yu Dai Wan) is a classic Chinese herbal formula that follows the TCM principle. The Chinese medicine acts to clear away heat and remove dampness and helps restore the balance. It is composed of Si Wu Tang, a famous Chinese medicine for women to nourish the Blood, along with 3 other Chinese herbs as detailed below. Chun Gen Pi (Ailanthus bark) is the chief Chinese herb in the formula. It is cold, bitter, and astringent in nature. Its cold nature helps clear the heat whereas its astringent property helps dry the discharge.
Huang Bai (Phellodendron bark) is bitter and cold as well. The Chinese herb drains Damp-Heat, especially when they are located in the lower part of the body. Huang Bai also drains fire and removes toxins. In the formula, Huang Bai strengthens the action of Chun Gen Pi.
Gao Liang Jiang (Galangal rhizome) warms the stomach and disperse the cold. It balances the action of the cold Chun Gen Pi and Huang Bai herbs.
Shu Di Huang (prepared Rehmannia root) nourishes the Yin energy and tonifies the blood.
Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis root) is a well known Chinese herb that nourishes the blood and supports healthy menses.
Bai Shao (Poeny root) nourishes the blood and harmonizes the liver.
Chuan Xiong (Szechuan lovage rhizome) is a unique Chinese herb that both invigorates the Blood and moves Qi. It expels wind and relieves discomfort.
The last four herbs also constitute Si Wu Tang.
